Each November, pride and patriotism fill the air and national madras fabric can be seen festooned across streets, offices, homes and vehicles as the country marks Independence. Antigua & Barbuda was officially declared a free nation on November 1, 1981, when colonial ties with Britain were formally severed. The date is celebrated annually with a vibrant parade, cultural shows, and a well-attended food fair showcasing a plethora of local dishes.

For sailors and landlubbers alike, Antigua Sailing Week remains one of the region’s best loved regattas. Laidback daily races combine with lively on-shore social events that continue to attract enthusiasts each year. Highlights include the Reggae in the Park concert. Dockyard Day, held in the majestic surrounds of UNESCO World Heritage Site Nelson’s Dockyard, brings the yearly festivities to a close with a marching band, tug o’ war, and the beating of the retreat by the country’s Royal Police Force.
